Biography
JAMES R. WINKLER is a partner at the law firm of Winkler, Kurtz & Winkler, LLP, located in Port Jefferson Station, New York. With over 35 years of experience, he has focused his legal practice on matrimonial and family law. Jim completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, graduating cum laude in 1971. He earned his law degree from Albany Law School of Union University in 1976 and began his career as an associate at the law office of former Assemblyman Peter J. Costigan, Esq. He later became a partner in the firm known as Costigan and Winkler. Jim has been an active participant in the legal community, serving as the 100th President of the Suffolk County Bar Association. He has also held the position of President of the Suffolk County Matrimonial Bar Association and has served in various roles on the Executive Boards of both associations. Jim has led the Matrimonial and Family Law Committee of the Suffolk County Bar Association and has chaired several task forces, including the task force on the Future of Indigent Legal Services. He has received the annual President’s Award and Director’s Award, and was recognized as the "Boss of the Year" by the National Association of Legal Secretaries of Suffolk County. Since 2008, Jim has been honored as a “Super Lawyer” in the field of matrimonial and family law by Law and Politics, an accolade granted to only a select group of attorneys on Long Island. Additionally, Jim has achieved the prestigious “AV Preeminent” peer review rating from Martindale Hubbell, signifying the highest level of legal ability and ethical standards. While Jim is a skilled litigator with a track record of trying numerous matrimonial and family law cases, he places a strong emphasis on resolving matters in a fair and amicable manner. In every case, he strives to tailor a resolution that meets the individual needs of his clients and their families.
