Biography

David Mejias is a Long Island lawyer specializing in family law and divorce. He is a managing partner at Mejias, Milgrim, Alvarado & Lindo where he has been practicing law for 26 years. Currently, he holds the position of Chairman at the Long Island Hispanic Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association, of which he previously served as President. In 2003, Dave Mejias made history as the first Latino elected to the Nassau County Legislature, where he served from 2004 to 2010. Recognized as a Top Ten Legal Eagle in the Family Law category by Long Island Pulse in 2013, Mejias has achieved groundbreaking victories for his clients in cases involving custody, maintenance, child support, and the challenging of post-nuptial and pre-nuptial agreements. His firm has also received accolades from the Coalition against Domestic Violence for its unwavering advocacy for victims of domestic abuse. During his tenure as a Nassau County Legislator, Mejias spearheaded initiatives to protect children from sex offenders by championing the enactment of the most stringent Megan’s Notification Law in New York State and crafting legislation enforcing residency restrictions for sex offenders. Furthermore, he successfully advocated for the authorization of law enforcement to install computer monitoring software on the devices of registered sex offenders. Notably, one of Mejias' significant achievements as a Legislator was the passage of Natalie’s Law, which mandated the creation of a publicly accessible map displaying heroin-related arrests within neighborhoods to raise awareness and required immediate notification to school districts in the event of an arrest nearby.
