Biography
With over 30 years of experience as a defense lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman has focused his practice on criminal defense in the state and federal courts of New York. In addition to New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, Mr. Lichtman represents clients in federal cases, appeals, and investigations across the nation. His clientele includes individuals facing charges related to a variety of offenses, ranging from white-collar crimes like RICO violations, securities fraud, and tax evasion to narcotics offenses, money laundering, health care fraud, and murder charges. Many of his cases involve high-profile clients and have garnered significant media attention. Graduating from Duke Law School in 1990, Mr. Lichtman established his own firm in 1999 and has achieved remarkable success in some of the most prominent legal arenas in the country. Notable clients he has represented include John A. Gotti, son of the notorious mob boss, and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. In the Gotti trial, Mr. Lichtman secured the dismissal of three murder conspiracy charges, an acquittal on a $25 million securities fraud charge, and a hung jury on all other counts. The media hailed the outcome as an "unbelievable courtroom upset" and praised Mr. Lichtman's legal acumen as "brilliant." His rigorous cross-examinations of government witnesses were characterized as a "relentless pounding," leaving witnesses "put through the blender" and "shredded." In essence, Mr. Lichtman's representation of high-profile clients not only attracts headlines but also results in successful case outcomes. Mr. Lichtman has also achieved significant victories in his appellate practice. In September 2010, he successfully secured the release of a client who had been sentenced to 27 years in prison for multiple counts of sexual assault of four victims. Following Mr. Lichtman's appeal to the NJ Appellate Division, which compelled the trial court to conduct a hearing on the potential ineffectiveness of trial counsel, the judge interrupted Mr. Lichtman's scathing critique of trial counsel and indicated readiness to vacate the conviction immediately, ensuring that the client would not return to prison.
