Biography
With over 27 years of experience as a criminal defense attorney in New York City, I have dedicated my career to representing individuals facing criminal charges. After graduating from Williams College and the University of Florida College of Law with honors, I started my legal journey at The Legal Aid Society as a trial lawyer. During my six years there, I contributed a chapter on cross-examining witnesses with prior criminal convictions to the "Criminal Defense Techniques" series published by Matthew Bender. In 1996, I co-founded Shalley and Murray with my colleague James Shalley, focusing exclusively on criminal defense cases. Throughout my career, I have provided expert testimony on New York Criminal Law in an international extradition case in London, written extensively about the New York City Criminal Justice System, and consulted on various entertainment industry projects, including the NBC miniseries "The Slap." I have successfully handled numerous complex criminal trials, including a case involving a false confession where my client had admitted to stealing over $50,000 worth of lottery tickets. My innovative defense strategy secured a favorable outcome. I particularly enjoy navigating search and seizure cases with intricate legal arguments. In December 2020, I established my solo criminal defense practice, where I continue to leverage my expertise and unwavering commitment to defend individuals accused of crimes in New York City and Nassau County.
