Jeffrey Wicks - Profile

From a young age, Jeff developed a strong commitment to fighting against injustices wherever they may arise. This dedication grew into a profound passion, leading him to pursue a career in law as a means to champion justice for those most in need. Jeff's journey began at the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office, where he tirelessly represented indigent criminal defendants for nearly five years. Since the late 1990s, he has been engaged in private practice, initially as a partner in the law firm of Bansbach, Zoghlin, Wicks & Wahl, P.C. before establishing his own practice in 2002. With over three decades of legal experience, Jeff's work culminated in a groundbreaking appellate court ruling in the case of Martinez v. County of Monroe in 2008. This landmark decision mandated the legal recognition of valid marriages of same-sex couples conducted outside New York State within the state's borders, pre-dating the official recognition of same-sex marriages in New York.

In addition to his legal practice, Jeff also imparted his knowledge and expertise as a lecturer in the Criminal Justice Department at SUNY Brockport for 12 years. His course offerings included unique subjects like the Death Penalty in America, a course he personally developed, and Forensic Evidence in Criminal Cases. Music also holds a special place in Jeff's heart, as he has been a musician and music lover for the majority of his life.
