Biography
With a focus on trial advocacy and litigation, Colin E. Kaufman specializes in commercial, tort, and real estate-related cases. Kaufman boasts four decades of legal experience, all dedicated to the practice of litigation. He earned his law degree from Fordham University Law School and has provided instruction in trial skills and advocacy for various legal institutions and organizations, including the NYS Bar Association and the NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services. Kaufman is also a published author, having written or coauthored three manuals for trial lawyers on topics such as negligence cases, effective depositions, and real evidence for trial practitioners.
Following his graduation from Trinity College, Kaufman served as a military policeman in the U.S. and in Vietnam, where he received multiple combat decorations, including two Bronze Stars and two Army Commendation Medals. Upon his return from Vietnam, Kaufman worked as a corruption investigator for the Office of the New York State Special Prosecutor before transitioning to a prosecutor role with the Westchester District Attorney's Office. During his nine-year tenure with the District Attorney's Office, Kaufman rose to the position of Chief of the General Trial Bureau, overseeing thousands of prosecutions, trials, and the training of trial attorneys.
Since leaving the District Attorney's Office, Kaufman has been practicing law in the private sector, handling a diverse range of litigation matters, from products liability to international contracts. Noteworthy is his role as co-lead counsel in the first case tried to verdict in the United States under the United Nations Convention on the International Sale of Goods. Kaufman has a proven track record, having tried over two hundred cases to verdict in both state and federal courts.
