Biography
My passion for immigration law was ignited years ago when I supported a Chinese refugee family from Vietnam alongside my mother. As a newly admitted member of the New York Bar at the time, I delved into the intricacies of immigration law to help "my family" attain U.S. citizenship and navigate the complex legal immigration system to sponsor other relatives. Witnessing their success fueled my commitment to aiding individuals in securing legal status in the United States. With over twenty-five years of experience, I have focused on immigration law in Dutchess County, NY, my hometown, and served as the managing partner of Barcher & Imam, P.C. in New York City. My clientele spans the globe, encompassing diverse religious beliefs, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. My academic journey began after graduating from Poughkeepsie High School, leading me to Harvard-Radcliffe in Cambridge, MA, where I pursued a Government major for four years with aspirations of a legal career. Following a seven-month stint in Europe with my then spouse, I enrolled at NYU School of Law in New York City and obtained my J.D. and LL.M. in International Legal Studies. Additionally, I dedicated a year to studying Buddhism and comparative religion and ethics at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge. Prior to my immigration law practice, I honed my legal skills for eight years at the Port Authority of NY & NJ, specializing in real estate and appellate practice. In 1992, I returned to my family residence in the Town of Poughkeepsie, commencing my immigration law practice.
