Biography

Gary Port was acknowledged by the New York Law Journal in 2016, under the "Those Who Lead, Pro Bono Category." He was also recognized in 2016 by the Center for Children, Families and the Law, and the Gitenstein Institute for Health Law and Policy. Additionally, in 2016, he was honored by Angel for Warriors for his Pro Bono contributions to Veterans. Mr. Port previously served as an Assistant Professor at the Maurice Deane School of Law, Hofstra University. He currently holds the position of Chairman of the Nassau County Bar Association Veterans’ Law Committee. Furthermore, Mr. Port has been appointed to State Senator John Brook’s advisory committee on Veterans issues. Mr. Port leads the Divorce and Family Law division of the firm, focusing on matters related to divorce, custody, support, and family law. He also practices in the field of complex commercial litigation, where commercial law often intersects with property division in divorce proceedings. As a retired Lieutenant Colonel, Mr. Port oversees the Military Law/Veterans Rights department, advocating for discharge upgrades and representing service members and veterans in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and at Courts-Martial. His legal appearances have been in New York State Court and New York Federal District Courts. Mr. Port is renowned for his expertise in military retirement pay and benefits concerning divorce, having conducted educational sessions for attorneys in New York and Pennsylvania. Mr. Port completed his law degree in 1986 and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army that same year. His active duty and reserve service extended until January 1, 2015, when he retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Throughout his career, Mr. Port held various roles, culminating in his position as the legal advisor (Staff Judge Advocate) to the Commanding General of the 78th Training Division. He was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal twice, the Army Commendation Medal thrice, and the Army Achievement Medal.
