Biography

Serving as a Partner at Tully Rinckey PLLC, Derrick specializes in criminal defense. Since becoming a part of the firm, Derrick has represented individuals facing a variety of criminal charges, encompassing all levels of misdemeanors and felonies as outlined in New York State’s Penal Law and Vehicle and Traffic Law, as well as federal criminal charges. Derrick brings a deep understanding of the law across multiple practice areas to Tully Rinckey, stemming from his previous role as a Client Relations Attorney. In this capacity, Derrick managed the operations of the firm’s Client Relations Department and offered legal support to prospective clients. Derrick aided potential clients with initial legal inquiries and provided them with appropriate guidance. Moreover, Derrick played a crucial role in assisting veterans in obtaining financial compensation due to unjust employment practices. Beyond participating in hearings and negotiating settlements before the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), Derrick also prepared briefs for submission to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Recognized as an "Up and Comer" by the Times Union in 2009, Derrick began his journey with the firm as a law clerk. Prior to joining Tully Rinckey PLLC, Derrick gained experience as an intern at the Schenectady County Attorney’s Office, where his focus was on family court matters. Derrick also served as a legal aide in the litigation division of the New York State Attorney General’s Office, handling lawsuits brought against the State by prisoners, as well as cases related to workplace retaliation and discrimination.
