Biography
Mr. John W. DeHaan has dedicated the past ten years to fighting for the rightful disability benefits of his clients. Before establishing The DeHaan Law firm, he served as the Supervising Attorney for Binder and Binder, P.C.’s long-term disability division, overseeing national litigation and securing victories in federal and state courts across the country. Mr. DeHaan is licensed to practice law in the State of New York, as well as in the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Southern, Northern, and Western Districts of New York, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuits, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans’ Claims. During his time at Binder and Binder, he achieved a substantial verdict against Guardian Life Insurance Company of America in the Florida U.S. District Court. Notably, as the lead attorney in Chapman v. Choice Care Long Island LTD Plan, he successfully argued for the application of equitable tolling in ERISA cases involving individuals with psychiatric disabilities. Mr. DeHaan commenced his legal career as a Litigation Associate at Menagh, Trainor, Mundo & Falcone, P.C., where he represented unions and union workers, drafted legal documents such as wills, living wills, and health care proxies, and assisted adoptive parents in adoption proceedings. He graduated with honors, holding dual degrees in History and Economics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Subsequently, he earned his Juris Doctor from New York Law School, where he served as the Notes & Comments Editor for the New York Law School Law Review. Mr. DeHaan is a member of various legal associations, including the Nassau County Bar Association, the Suffolk County Bar Association, the Federal Bar Council, and the National Organization of Veterans’ Advocates (NOVA).
