Biography

Nicholas is a native of Syracuse, hailing from the City’s “Northside.” He graduated from Henninger High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (with highest honors) in Political Science from Brockport State University in Brockport, New York. He also obtained a Juris Doctor Degree from Western New England College, School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts. Nicholas commenced his legal profession in 1986 as a Deputy County Attorney with the Onondaga County Department of Law, where he handled cases related to child abuse and neglect. Subsequently, he spent 16 years as an Assistant District Attorney with the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office. During his tenure in this role, Nicholas prosecuted a wide range of cases including general felony, violent felony, career criminal, and narcotics cases. He held the position of Chief of the White Collar Bureau and was part of the Homicide Bureau for eleven years. Nicholas departed from the District Attorney’s Office in 2004 as a Chief Assistant assigned to the Homicide Bureau. In 2001, he served as a Judge in the Syracuse City Court and played a pivotal role in establishing and overseeing the Syracuse Community Court. Joining the Syracuse law firm of Costello, Cooney & Fearon in 2004 as Special Counsel, Nicholas concentrated on Family Law, Criminal Defense, and Insurance Defense. In 2007, he returned to prosecution as part of the New York State Attorney General’s Office, Criminal Prosecutions Bureau. As an Assistant Attorney General (AAG), Nicholas handles cases across approximately seven counties in Central New York, focusing primarily on investigating and prosecuting white collar and financial crimes. He held the position of President of the Onondaga County Bar Association in 2014.
